How to add some MAGIC to your Winter Wellness
You know about yoga – and you’ve heard about sound healing…but what happens when you combine these two practices?
MAGIC! That’s what happens…
Let’s talk about Winter Wellness, and how combining yoga and healing sound can be a powerful antidote to seasonal health and mood “dips”.
Yoga and sound therapy are both practices that have been associated with many health benefits, including positive effects on mood and immunity. But how exactly does that work?
Firstly, yoga…It’s not a “work out” it’s definitely a “work in”. Yes it involves stretching – and building our strength, flexibility and balance. But if you think that’s all it does – think again (and apologies to the yoga teachers reading this…we know the breadth and depth of yoga!)
If you want my quick answer, here it is! If we live in a state of ongoing or constant stress, tension or anxiety – it affects our gut health. We cannot absorb all the nutrients from our food if our gut isn’t working well. If we don’t absorb these precious nutrients, our body and mind can’t function efficiently. That means your immunity is compromised, your energy and vitality are lowered and you may just feel pretty crap mentally.
Longer version below…worth a read and MOST IMPORTANTLY…why not reflect on what you’re doing to support yourself through the winter?
Yoga: (Free gift – gentle yoga video)
- Stress Reduction:
- A good Yoga practice has to include a clear awareness of how our body is feeling, moving and the subtle changes when we move from one posture (asana) to another. Mindfulness and controlled breathing (pranayama) will activate the body’s relaxation response (shifting us from the “fight or flight” sympathetic to the “rest and digest” parasympathetic nervous system).
- Reducing stress levels has a positive impact on our gut health (how we digest food and absorb nutrients) and in turn the immune system. Chronic stress is associated with immune suppression.
- Physical Exercise:
- All types of yoga involve physical postures (asana) and movements that can increase flexibility, strength, and balance. This improves how we move, preserving our energy and influences how each system in the body functions well.
- We all know that regular physical activity of any kind is linked to a healthier immune system. However, pranayama has shown to significantly improve lung function, cleansing the tissues of the body, and calming the mind.
- Mind-Body Connection:
- Yoga emphasises the connection between the mind and body, promoting self-awareness and mental well-being.
- A positive mental state is known to contribute to a stronger immune system. Enjoy this Free gift – a winter yoga nidra
- Lymphatic System Stimulation:
- Certain yoga postures and movements can stimulate the lymphatic system, which plays a crucial role in immune function by transporting immune cells and filtering out toxins.
Sound Therapy: (Free gift – enjoy this Vedic Shanti/peace mantra)
- Stress Reduction:
- Sound therapy, including practices like humming, chant and mantra, will induce a state of an alert relaxation. A sound ‘bath’, where healing instruments from around the world are played to bring about the relaxation response, can guide you into deep, restful relaxation too.
- This relaxation response may help reduce stress-related hormones that can impact our immunity.
- Vibrational Healing:
- The vibrations produced by chanting have a harmonising effect on the body’s cells and energy systems.
- For thousands of years these vibrations have been known to enhance the body’s natural healing abilities.
- Brainwave Entrainment:
- Brainwave “entrainment” is where our brainwave patterns respond to sound and vibration, bringing them into an aligned state. This creates clarity, calm and a ‘healing state’, and is said to support us in functioning more efficiently.
- This can contribute to a sense of calm and balance, positively impacting mood and potentially influencing immune function.
- Enhanced Mood:
- Chant and mantra have been shown to improve mood, reduce anxiety, and enhance overall emotional well-being.
- Positive emotions and a sense of well-being are associated with a more robust immune system.
- Spirituality
- Being part of a religious or spiritual community is known for being so important for people’s sense of community, their mental and emotional health. Being with like minded people with shared values and beliefs is something that can be missing for many in the 21st century. Chanting – whether that is in a group or by having your own practice at home – is thousands of years old and connects people to an inner sense of spirituality. No belief system is required – as it is said the chants reveal the Truth to those who practice regularly.
YOGA & SOUND = MAGIC!
When you combine gentle yoga postures, breathwork and simple sound (chant and mantra) you create a healing alchemy. Breathwork (either through direct pranayama or chanting) cleanses all the systems in the body and also calms the nervous system. Chant alone focuses the mind, becoming a meditation in it’s own right. Mantra – specific healing sounds – could be described as “Mantra Medicine” (there are literally thousands of chants and mantras with specific healing qualities).
There is a direct link between these two modalities and our physical, mental and emotional health. In turn our immunity can be supported or enhanced. In my personal experience, the calmer and more content I am in my mind, the more energy and vitality I have. It’s when life gets too challenging or throws me a huge curve ball that my health has (in the past) taken a dive.
Yoga, breathwork, and chanting can all lead to a calmer mind and body – which will support your gut health – and your Winter Wellness.
